What Me, Worry?

Katherine Sherman, Professional Life Coach, San Diego, CA

Would it be like not to worry? Hmmm...sounds pretty cool...no nagging feeling that something is undone, no concerns about that endless To Do list, an overall feeling of peace...but is it possible to stop worrying? A great spiritual teacher, Ramesh Balsekar, has this to say about it:

You cannot deliberately stop worrying. If you try to stop worrying, you get even more involved. So what is the answer? It is simple: when worry comes up, let it come up. As worry comes up, if it is merely witnessed, you are not taken deeper into further involvement.

But what does it mean to witness my worry? It means to notice it, to be aware of it. Once we're aware of the worry, we're no longer taken over by it--we're the observer, we have some distance from it. Then what?

The next step is to take a slow, deep breath in, and a long, slow exhale. As we do this, our bodies begin to relax. We may notice the tightness and tension in our bodies--perhaps in our shoulders, neck and back. Take a nice stretch to help release this tension. At this point look up--out a window if you can--let your gaze soften on whatever meets your eye.

In one-two minutes, you're feeling better. The less we worry, the more productive we are, the more peaceful we are, the happier we feel.
